Magistrates’ training

Training costs very little

Magistrates' training costs the state about £500 per year.

Basic training

  • Training sessions totalling about three days before sitting for the first time,

  • Annual refresher courses thereafter.

  • Magistrates who sit in the Youth Court or the Family Proceedings Court are given extra training specific to those duties.

  • Training is largely "on the job" under the supervision of a mentor and always with an experienced chairman of the bench.

  • Later, magistrates will visit prisons, attendance centres and other penal institutions.

Training provided locally.

Training conducted locally by the local committee, overseen by the Judicial Studies Board (Magisterial Committee)

MNTI(2)

Magistrates' National Training Initiative MNTI(2) provides a structured approach to training.

There is a 3 years training cycle with appraisal.

The training is comprehensive and thorough and includes Key Skills.
