Magistrates' training
costs the state
about £500 per year.

Basic training |
-
Training sessions totalling about three days before sitting
for the first time,

Annual refresher courses thereafter.

Magistrates who sit in the Youth Court or the Family
Proceedings Court are given extra training specific to those duties.

Training is largely
"on the job" under the supervision of a mentor and always with an experienced
chairman of the bench.

Later, magistrates
will visit prisons, attendance centres and other penal institutions.

Magistrates' National Training Initiative
MNTI(2) provides a structured approach to training.
There is a 3 years training cycle with appraisal.
The training is comprehensive and thorough and
includes Key Skills. |
