Judge’s pay

Judge’s pay

  • About half the average QC's income.

  • An experienced barrister must accept a considerable fall in income on becoming a judge (though he does acquire a pension if he serves for at least 20 years).

  • Their pay fixed by statute, is reviewed by the independent Senior Salaries Review Body and Parliament generally accepts its recommendations.

March 1999 The Department for Constitutional Affairs (formerly the  Lord Chancellor's Department)  revealed

  • 31 QCs who had been offered appointment to the High Court Bench since 1995, 11 would accept, 15 declined the offer in the short term, only 5 said they would never accept.

Salaries

Judges pay ranges from  £225,000 for the Lord Chief Justice to £96,500 for District Judges (outside London).

 

Lords of Appeal in Ordinary (The Law Lords get paid less - £194,000 - than the Lord Chief Justice)
